Diabetes
Surgery, fasting and changes in routine can all affect blood glucose. The key preoperative questions are what type of diabetes you have, what medicines or insulin you use, your recent control, whether you have kidney or heart complications, and how your treatment will be adjusted while you are fasting.
Patients taking an SGLT2 inhibitor need early identification because these medicines are usually withheld for several days before scheduled surgery. Patients on insulin need an individual dose plan; insulin should not simply be stopped without instructions, especially in type 1 diabetes.
