PATIENT INFORMATION
What is a pre-anaesthesia assessment?
A pre-anaesthesia assessment is the medical review that takes place before you receive anaesthesia or sedation for an operation or procedure. Its purpose is to understand your health, identify anything that could affect anaesthesia or recovery, and make a safe plan for your care.
The assessment is not simply a formality or a “clearance.” Your anaesthesiologist may review your medical history, medicines, previous operations and anaesthetics, allergies, test results, heart and lung symptoms, ability to exercise, and your airway. Depending on your health and the planned procedure, you may need no additional tests at all, or you may need further evaluation or treatment before surgery.
The assessment also helps the anaesthesia team plan practical details: what type of anaesthesia may be suitable, which medicines should be taken or withheld, how long you should fast, whether you may need special monitoring, and what level of care may be needed after the procedure.
